The San Marcos Writing Project Wiki

This Wiki is meant to support the San Marcos Writing Project, housed at the California State University, San Marcos.

 

 The San Marcos Writing Project is one of the seventeen professional development sites within the California Writing Project.  In 1974, James Gray began a model of professional development based on a model of teachers teaching teachers housed at a university-based site, the University of California-Berkeley, which later became the Bay Area Writing Project. The model is the largest and longest running ongoing network of teacher professional development that became the model for other subject matter projects. Still based in Berkeley, the National Writing Project now has over 200 affiliated sites in all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

Ways to Get Involved with the San Marcos Writing Project

 

Summer Invitational Professional Development for Teachers - June 27 - July 27, 2011 M-Th 8:00 am - 3:30 pm. Teachers from all grade levels from Pre-Kindergarten to College are welcome to apply to the institute. Teachers do not need to be English teachers, and we encourage teachers from all content areas to apply.  We previously had math, science, social-science, history, and physical education teachers go through the institute. This summer invitational is the core of the Writing Project model.  The institute allows time to share, reflect, and grow in the company of a community of dedicated and lifelong learning teachers.  It is also a lot of fun.  This includes presentations from other area teachers, guest speakers, as well as CSUSM university faculty who share their insights and best practices into the teaching of writing.  

 

Typical Schedule:

8:30-8:45 - Journal writing and reflection

8:45 - Sharing of the Log

8:50 - Laurie shared Youtube of the Day and Poem of the Day

9:00 - First demonstration by project teacher

10:15 - Snack

10:30 - Second demonstration by project teacher

12:00-1pm - Lunch (PotLuck on Thursdays)

1-3pm - Devoted Writing Time (also personal reflection time)

3-4pm - Writing Groups, Book Groups, (Author's on Thursdays)

 

Advanced Institutes and Continuity Groups (Wiki - smwpgroups.pbworks.com)- For people that have done the Summer Invitational, these ongoing groups are avenues to stay engaged in writing research and continue participating within the San Marcos Writing Project community.  These groups typically form a book club around a study book which will be provided by the Project and meet to discuss their book as well as share their own reflections and ideas from their own implementation in their classrooms.  It is hoped that these groups will develop in-service trainings that may be presented at their schools or districts, presented for other districts that may inquire, presented at regional, state and national teaching conferences, shared to advanced institute attendees or for special workshops during the summer, or written into research or publications that will submitted for publication in journals or as books.  Currently, the SMWP is supporting continuity groups in Technology, Six-Traits Writing, Academic Writing, and Supporting English Language Learners although is looking for leaders for other groups. 

 

Young Writers Camps - Attention parent! If you have children from 2-12 grades, the San Marcos Writing Project offers summer Writing Camps at number of school sites throughout Northern San Diego County.  These camps are staffed by credentialed teachers--most of whom have done over 200 hours of intensive professional development focusing on the teaching of writing.  The focus of the camps are to help children discover themselves as writers and give them the tools to be able to express themselves and their ideas through writing.  With fun creative lessons and guest speakers that often include professional writers and cartoonists, the writing camp helps build campers writing fluency and their ability to develop their thoughts into words.
